A Brief Respite
2005.08.22 (Mon) 12:43

For those non-subscribers, we'll let you in on a secret: our old posts seem to get a heck of a lot of comments. Unfortunately, most of the commentators they attract seem to be the total nutbars or the relatively monosyllabic — and, since we're us, we feel the need to (at the very least) set the record straight with these folks before moving on to new business.

Meanwhile, real life marches on, and the Two Percent Company isn't the only endeavor we're involved in. What with work, various creative projects, and one of our members in the midst of a move (forcing the rest of us to help!), things on the real life front have been just as hectic.

Suffice it to say...we've been busy. Hence the lack of much new material. We don't see much more new stuff coming for at least a week or so, but we wanted to let you know that we're still here, we're still breathing, and we're still pondering the imponderables.

Feel free to drop us a line if you think a particular news item has fallen through the cracks (and not even Lewis Black gets to it). We'll be back to "work" (2% style) as soon as possible.

Care to share any of the recently active past topics?

Jeff from the Two Percent Company, 2005.08.24 (Wed) 01:13 [Link] »

S.T.R.. — I can't remember all of the most recent comments off-hand, but there used to be a non-stop party going on over in the Allison DuBois Week Rants (and related entries). We just closed off comments on the big five DuBois Rants, so that party's over.

Really, it serves us right for being Number Two on a Google search for "Allison DuBois" more often than not — I'm sure we're Number Two in Allison's thoughts, as well, and that she's really Number One'd off about our Google ranking. Which is just a bonus.

"Feel free to drop us a line if you think a particular news item has fallen through the cracks..."

Elvis tol' me telepathically to tell y'all ah saw him copulatin' with a bigfoot in the space ship o' the aliens whut abducted me.

Tom from the Two Percent Company, 2005.08.25 (Thu) 10:43 [Link] »

See, that's just silly. Everyone knows that Elvis and Bigfoot are the same person. Sheesh — I take a little while off to move, and the whole place goes to hell.

Grendel, 2005.08.25 (Thu) 12:34 [Link] »

Well, see, there you go. Humans (Elvis) and Bigfeets are two entirely different species. It's all very scientific. BTW, Elvis picked out the ugliest bigfoot in the bunch.

S.T.R., 2005.08.25 (Thu) 13:49 [Link] »

I have been refered to as a Yeti before. Maybe I really am one, you'd never know. Unless I told you.

But alas all I can give you is blurry photos of myself.

Grendel, 2005.08.25 (Thu) 17:39 [Link] »

Blurry photos are state of the art in the scientific field of bigfootology, aka megapodiatry.

Todd, 2005.08.27 (Sat) 12:10 [Link] »

Maybe you ought to lock posts older than a certain date. I have seen this done fairly often on other sites.

MBains, 2005.08.30 (Tue) 09:36 [Link] »

Did someone ask for blurry photos of ... huh? oh, nevermind...

Grendel, 2005.08.30 (Tue) 16:39 [Link] »

There's a known huckster currently upsetting the bigfoot bleever community with his reports of having captured a bigfoot. It's funny and sad at once to see the BF bleevers as they instinctively doubt the word of this guy (well-known hoaxer and con artist) and yet still hold out hope that maybe, just maybe.....

Grendel, 2005.08.30 (Tue) 16:46 [Link] »

BTW, I'd love to see the 2% folks tackle a current social phenomenon wherein fundy Christians actually feel themselves to be suffering *persecution* at the hands of the surrounding society. (WTF?, lol)

Here in North Cack-a-lacky, 2 inches from the Bible Belt buckle, it's difficult to listen with a straight face as some obese Xian bigot in a brand new white Caddy wearing a blinding white Faulkner suit with fedora, sipping a mint julep from his rocking chair on the porch of his $1.5 million dollar antebellum tobacco country manse goes on and on about how he's put down in society because of his beliefs.

Fan-man, 2005.09.02 (Fri) 14:58 [Link] »

2%:
What is your take on heredity versus environment? I was passing time by watching cable TV late last night and stumbled upon a "reel" classic: 'Trading Places.' Both Randolph and Mortimer had excellent points in regard to which was more influential in a person's life. The question is philosphical in nature, therefore certain to rub your ass like sand paper. How 'bout it? Are people born psychic or do they need to be caudled within the comfy confines of a sleepy college campus with the stench of incense and patchouli polluting the air?

MBains, 2005.09.02 (Fri) 15:32 [Link] »

She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her
To find what's waiting inside

The Year of the Cat
(Al Stewart)

Mmm... patchouli... If I ever manage to stay married, it'll be to a sexually fiendish patchouli wearer. No doubt 'bout it!

Grendel, 2005.09.03 (Sat) 17:11 [Link] »

As I understand it, psychic powers are neither learned nor inherited -they are awarded to the Chosen Few.

Rockstar, 2005.09.06 (Tue) 12:22 [Link] »

So I guess the question should be "is gullibillity learned or inherited?"

The Two Percent Company, 2005.09.06 (Tue) 13:40 [Link] »

Hmmm...

Todd — we've thought about locking comments on all old posts, but the fact that we've received intelligent feedback on posts months after we wrote them makes us hesitate. We may someday get to that point, but for now we're trying to avoid anything that sweeping, and instead locking comments on specific problem posts. We shall see.

Grendel — regarding the christian persecution complex, that's a big topic. We've mentioned it a few times in various Rants, but we've never hit it head on. Partly, we're not sure what to say about it other than "what the fuck are they thinking," which isn't much of a substantive Rant. Hmmm...

Fan-man — well, in general, both heredity and environment play important roles in determining someone's personality. Specific to psychics, the same is probably true — good con artists are probably both born and bred. That whole "holier than thou" self-important attitude that many "psychics" possess, on the other hand, is likely bred — or at least no one has identified the pompous ass gene yet.

Grendel, 2005.09.06 (Tue) 19:06 [Link] »

Being a 'psychic', whether that belief is sincere or cynical, has got to be totally learned behavior. It's all culturally framed.
