| The Score on Science Education
[Last Modified on 2006.12.03]

While it is important for our children to learn actual tasks such as reading and writing, mathematics, and computer usage, it is far more important that they learn the method of scientific thought.

  • The scientific method — consisting of observation, hypothesis, prediction, testing, and repeating when necessary — can be applied to all fields of study and all situations where natural or logical forces are at work. Arming our children with the proper scientific method now will make them into discerning adults capable of making rational, educated decisions. This can do nothing but improve that state of civilization and humankind in general.
  • A convenient byproduct of learning the scientific method is the mandate to question beliefs that have no evidence to support them. This could lead to the much-needed demise of organized religion. The religious zealots who argue against true science being taught in our schools tacitly reveal just how antithetical their beliefs are to the scientific method, which relies on experience and evidence. The fundamentalists are right to fear and reject the scientific method — because it quite simply proves them wrong. Their vehement attacks on rational thought only serve to emphasize this fact.
