« Is This the Best Argument You Can Muster? The RantsBoy Are We Stupid »

Hey, Mainstream Media, What Color is the Sky in Your World?
2006.08.10 (Thu) 14:06

We just couldn't let this go without commenting on it:

Idiots find old ladies slipping on ice hilarious

[Geraldo] RIVERA: You know, Comedy Central is now a big hit, Stewart and the Colbert guy.

[Bill] O'REILLY: Yeah, they do OK. They do OK.

RIVERA: They make a living putting on video of old ladies slipping on ice and people laughing. That's their life. That's their life. They exist in a small little place where they count for nothing. The history will be made by those who have affirmative thoughts, who make, you know, innovative suggestions in life and are inclusive.

[our emphasis]

Seriously, Geraldo "My Upper Lip is Still Trapped in the Seventies" Rivera, have you ever even watched the fucking shows?! Rivera seems to be confusing Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert with Bob Saget.

"Old ladies slipping on ice and people laughing"?

Really?

Really?!

That's what Geraldo thinks the Daily Show is about? Literally the only thing Geraldo has asserted here is his own utterly asinine ignorance and blindness to American popular culture. What a fucking backwards, stupid imbecile of a man. He managed to make himself look like the biggest asshole in the room while sitting next to Bill "War on Christmas" O'Reilly — and that in itself is quite an amazing feat. It's actually quite amusing to watch these two useless blowhards assuring each other that they are far superior to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert (even if they do say so themselves).

The sly reference to "the Colbert guy" was also quite amusing, considering how handily Colbert skewered the mainstream media at the Correspondents' Dinner (and how well he parodies the right-wing talking heads on his show four nights a week). In fact, in last night's pre-Report exchange between Jon and Stephen, they played a clip of Geraldo's and O'Reilly's babbling (with Stephen firmly in character, and Jon just utterly and appropriately baffled by the whole bizarre incident).

You know, folks, it really just comes down to the same ridiculous bullshit every time with folks like Geraldo and O'Reilly: their heads are so far up their asses that they can't even accurately report what other people actually do, let alone respond to it with any kind of rational thought and measured reason. It's a horrifying thought that fully half the country likely gets their information from idiots like these.

And for the record, Geraldo, what Jon and Stephen really provide is a rational person's perspective on the asinine antics of the government and the mainstream media. As Jon himself would certainly agree, it is indeed sad that intelligent people have to turn to Comedy Central to get a perspective that isn't colored by partisan hackery or sensationalist nonsense. But then, whose fault is that? Dickhead.

I seem to remember reading that fans of the Daily Show and Colbert Report are actually better informed on political and social matters than the folks who rely on the mainstream media. Not surprising, really. And Geraldo's blowing smoke was no surprise either. We're talking about the guy who "Opened Al Capone's Secret Vaults" on national tv here. All the "superior reporting" provided by Geraldo does is prove that the mainstream media really IS as moronic as Stewart and Colbert make it out to be.

In surprising contrast to this, a segment on Fox News last night mentioned the Daily Show without criticizing it. They took up that old montage the Daily Show did of Bush's speeches which ended with the splicing "One of my favorite tactics... is to tell people... the same... word... over and over again."

Of course, they're still hilariously behind the times if they only found this now.

But seriously, Fox News plugging the Daily Show? What's next, World Net Daily plugging The Daily Kos?

Since we now have the Daily Show every night in Australia (oh, the unalloyed delight), seeing this crap from Geraldo made my jaw drop.

But I don't think it could possibly be ignorance of the show, otherwise, what made him so angry that he felt he had to comment on it?

It reminded me of a small child lashing out blindly and irrationally at someone they perceived had done wrong to them. Just pathetic really. Colbert's appearance the following night spelled it out nicely. Gotta love that guy. Now, if only we can get Colbert downunder as well.

Mike: For our money, the most intelligent reaction to the utter idiocy of the government and the mainstream media is mockery and anger — and that's exactly what both Jon and Stephen deliver on a daily basis. So we tend to agree that the viewers of shows like Jon's and Stephen's are likely to be more informed and better educated than viewers of morons like Geraldo (and we won't even mention the asshats who slurp up every ounce of bullshit that O'Reilly spews out).

Infophile: That is odd, though Bush-bashing among the neocons is becoming more and more fashionable these days. It is sad that it took Fox News this long to "stumble across" that clip, though. I guess they were too busy bashing gays and immigrants to notice it when it aired, many moons ago.

Adam: We tend to agree that there was a large element of sour grapes inherent in both Geraldo's statements and O'Reilly's replies. It sounded an awful lot like they were trying to convince themselves of something they didn't believe in the slightest.
