Saint Dragon and the George
2006.06.08 (Thu) 13:49

As reported on God is for Suckers, a variety of Guevara-esque posters featuring the archly quizzical visage of that unstoppable political satirist Stephen Colbert have started cropping up in San Francisco's Mission District, in honor of Colbert's brilliant skewering of President Bush and others at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

No matter what the sore losers in the mainstream media say, Colbert's performance was direct, biting, witty, and badly needed. We'd like to honor Stephen with our own depiction of his courage and fortitude, below. That is all.

The Spear of Truthiness Prevails.

Truthiness? I've seen this elsewhere but ... 'truthiness'?

I suggest you drop that perversion of the word past-haste. It makes y'all sound like giggly teen-age girls.

No, really. It's horrible.

Um...it isn't our word. It's arguably Colbert's signature joke, and oddly enough, it's also a real word according to the Oxford English Dictionary (which was a surprise to Colbert, apparently, as well as to the American Dialect Society who initially credited Colbert with creating the word when they voted it the Word of the Year for 2005). So in this case, there's no other word that would suffice.

Out of that context, I have no trouble believing that it sounds like an immensely silly word, but for me, it is 100% Colbert at this point. But, hey, to each his own.

I take it back; it is a real word.

In my defense I have neither seen Colbert on TV nor in that famous video roasting Bush. I thought it was all made up.

No worries at all, Brian. Quite honestly, I appreciate the honesty in your comment. It's good to know that, if we did make up a word that made us sound really silly, it would be pointed out to us.

Oh, and while Colbert's show isn't required watching (it's grown on me somewhat, but the "in character" thing gets tired sometimes), the White House Correspondents Dinner really should be. Man, that's funny stuff, especially with Bush sitting right there.
