This Blog is Solar-Powered
2006.05.06 (Sat) 23:15

We just wanted to call out DarkSyde's latest "Science Friday" over on UTI, which is a scientific and poetic tribute to the source of all energy on Earth: the Sun. As DS says:

If the earth were subjected to the entire output of the sun for even a few moments, it would broil our lovely world into incandescent vapor. What little our modest planet does intercept warms our world and powers the great global heat exchanges, some of which we perceive as wind and rain. The tiny slice of remaining sunlight which leaks into countless biochemical factories suspended in the heart of every green plant cell are what sustains almost the entire terrestrial biosphere, and only a small fraction of that is occasionally locked away and slowly transformed into potential energy in the form of oil, gas, and coal. Thus you and I and our entire civilization, along with most every plant and animal, are all ultimately sun-powered. A fitting diet indeed for creatures made of star dust.

Beautiful, DS. Thanks.

And for those of you who want to tap into the power of the Sun directly, we found this little beauty (made by Voltaic) on Amazon. Hey, if you're picking one up anyway, would it hurt you to pick up a few for us?

We're slowly moving from an economy based on heat engines to one that harneses the natural power all around us. Solar, sure, but also using rotational forces to fling things around with gay abandon.

Gay abandon? Well, we know the Bush Administration won't stand for that.
