Disney Gets to Be the Good Guy!
2005.11.10 (Thu) 18:33
PZ has a quite intelligent post up analogizing the NAS and NSTA's refusal to grant copyright permissions to the Kansas State Board of Education, since said board is trying to Mix 'n' Match™ actual science approved by these folks who set the standards with that load of fetid dingo's kidneys we all know and loathe, Intelligent Design.
PZ's analogy posits a non-profit, benevolent and beneficent Disney Corporation providing their wholesome entertainment to children, and a crooked movie theatre owner splicing in clips from Manos: The Hands of Fate and Showgirls. Okay, yeah, it makes more sense when PZ spells it out. Go read his post.
PZ pretty much covers it, but we would like to address an interesting point that comes up a few times in the comments, such as from rrt:
...I wonder what damage this might do in the public arena by (as suggested above) reinforcing the IDists claims that we're trying to stifle free speech.
While we agree that the IDists are extremely likely to cry "Oppression!" in response to this smack in the face from real scientists, we don't think that's enough of a reason to not smack them in the face in the first place. Look at it this way: if you grant them permission to use the scientific standards boards' materials, they claim they're supported by scientists; if you refuse permission, they claim they're being unfairly discriminated against. Either way, they'll pull some kind of bullshit — so you can't base your decision on their inevitably underhanded and stupid response.
If the IDists would just do what all real scientists do, and go through the arduous process of hypothesis, experimentation, observation and peer review, then we wouldn't have to worry. Instead, as always, they try to sneak their bullshit in through legal channels, and then complain when the scientific community doesn't back them up. Aw, poor babies. Take your ball and go home. Actually, wait — that's our ball...you just go home.
