Carnival of the Godless #27
2005.11.13 (Sun) 23:52
The twenty seventh edition of the Carnival of the Godless was posted earlier today at Pharungyla. Go, read, learn.
We do want to take a moment to point out something that PZ mentioned, and a request he made:
...you see, I'd thought that I would balance the yin and yang of atheism: on one side, the ungodly would rail against the unreason and oppression of living in a religious society; on the other, we'd have the affirmations, the positive assertions of what it means to be a freethinker. Both are important.
What he found was that the overwhelming number of posts were on the left side — those ranting about the harm, silliness, and stupidity of religion — and only two posts fit on the right side — those extolling the virtues of a life not bound by religion. Hey, we can understand the imbalance — we ourselves have written many more left-column posts than we have right-column posts. As PZ says, both are important, and he has made the following request:
I would suggest, though, that we're failing to communicate a significant aspect of what it means to be godless, and we're not getting the case for atheism across.
The next edition will be at The Evangelical Atheist on 27 November. I'd like to propose a challenge to the freethought community: for every link you send in to cotg-host@brentrasmussen.com that mocks the foolishness and futility of religion, I'd also like all of the submitters to write one post that doesn't reference religion at all, that highlights the virtues of godlessness, and send that in as well.
Both are important, and we look forward to reading more from the right-column in two weeks.
