This Kid is in High School & He's Already Smarter than Bush
2005.03.10 (Thu) 15:26
It seems that Langley High School in Virginia holds an annual Case Day in which important legal issues are debated by the students. Consider this quote from Philip Wilcox, a high school senior who is debating on behalf of stem cell research:
"Many scientists believe that using stem cells could control and treat various kinds of diseases, like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes, glaucoma, and could possibly be used to regenerate organs for those in need of transplants.... Over 100 million Americans who suffer from those diseases could be helped through stem cell research.... Do we stand for the lives of embryos that would otherwise be destroyed, that are currently sitting in freezers from in-vitro fertilization processes and were not needed, or do we stand for the lives of those who suffer from diseases?"
And with that, Philip has shown that he is able to grasp this most simple of concepts, where so many adults in positions of authority have failed. Including President Bush. Thank you, Philip, for restoring some of our faith in the younger generation.
The rest of the article is worth a read as well, until it switches to coverage of a "panel of religious leaders" including Judge McKathan (the Alabama judge who embroidered the Ten Commandments on his judicial robes), who spout off the usual barbs. You can safely stop reading at that point.
