Terri Schiavo: Psychics & Loons Set Us Straight
2005.03.26 (Sat) 14:36
In case you're not the kind who cottons to medical or legal facts, and if you're tired of all of the uninformed opinions circulating around the Terri Schiavo case, it's comforting to know that we have qualified spiritual experts to help us see the situation clearly. As reported on The Daily Show, formerly televised "medium" John Edward, appeared on the March 24th episode of Fox & Friends (the Fox morning show) to enlighten us on Terri's situation.
We'll let Jon Stewart present this (from a clip found on Crooks and Liars, edited for just the "psychic" content):
(Original clip from Crooks and Liars)
In case you can't view the clip, here's a little taste of Steve Doocey's interview with Edward, found on Media Matters:
DOOCY: You mentioned the Terri Schiavo case. Some might wonder, "Well, you know what, I wonder if he could communicate with her."
EDWARD: I do believe that the soul, the consciousness, can communicate when they're in a state, whether it be a mentally incapacitated person, someone who's in a coma. It's a consciousness, and the soul has a living consciousness. So whether it's in a physical vehicle or not, there is still the ability to connect. Many people will have what they call out-of-body experiences, or astral dreams. Two very living people, that are healthy, could have a kind of connection in a dream state that can be validated. So why not somebody who's in this case?
Sure, John — why not? As long as you're making up the rules as you go, we see no reason to exclude a situation like this from falling under the realm of your "spirit medium powers." After all, if you said that you couldn't communicate with her, you probably wouldn't have been on television...
DOOCY: So she may not be able to talk with her brain, but she can with her soul --
EDWARD: But she's clear on what's going -- and I can tell you that she's definitely clear on what's happening now around her.
Now, we didn't see the Fox program in question, but from the clips provided by the Daily Show, John Edward doesn't seem to indicate what Terri's wishes are. He mentions that she is aware of what's going on around her, but not what she thinks about it, or whether she wants to live or die. Frankly, we're amazed that we got such a nebulous answer from this guy — he's usually so detailed and precise! Also, since Terri's not technically dead, we're a little fuzzy on how Edward is communicating with her. Based on his description, so is he, but there's no need to let that stop him.
So if John Edward can't give us the hard information we so badly desire, who can? Well, our old buddy Victor Zammit, that's who. In case you aren't familiar with Victor, he claims to be a lawyer in Australia (though we hear that fact is disputed), and he writes books full of nut-job paranormal speculation. He is also a very poor writer. We can only repeat a small chunk of text from his web site because if we included more, we would likely make your eyes bleed:
I believe that ultimately, given the circumstances, only Terri Schiavo herself had the authority to decide what should be done. In the spiritual context that is called: SELF-RESPONSIBILITY. Medical specialists stated in admissible evidence that she will never have consciousness, never be able to live without life support. There is NO spiritual obligation to stop her from crossing over. We are ALL responsible for our own acts and omissions — guaranteed! But we are NOT responsible for anything outside our free will. Anything else is the lobbyists' voice about the matter. Ought the right to determine Terri's future be left to politicians, religionists, ethicists, lobbyists with their own mostly uninformed but selfish agenda or to the Terri Schiavo herself — as she expressly stated before she entered her 'vegetative state'?
Well, if we weed through the word jumble above, we think Victor believes that Terri should be allowed to die. In case you're concerned that you share the same opinion as this bozo, take comfort in the fact that his rationale descends into unintelligible mumbo-jumbo. And if that gives you no solace, then just remember: the sun even shines on a dog's ass some days.
We'll keep you posted if the Two Percent Company's favorite paranormal diva, Allison DuBois, weighs in.
