Torture Lawsuit Against Rumsfeld to be Announced
2005.02.28 (Mon) 21:54
According to a press release found on Progressive Newswire, the ACLU and Human Rights First will hold a press conference tomorrow, March 1, at 10:30AM EST in Washington, DC to announce a lawsuit against a "high-ranking U.S. government official" regarding alleged incidents of torture. From the press release:
At a 10:30 a.m. news conference here tomorrow, the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights First (formerly Lawyers Committee for Human Rights), joined by former military and government officials, will announce a lawsuit against a high- ranking U.S. government official on behalf of eight men who were tortured and abused by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The lawsuit will charge that officials at the highest level bear ultimate responsibility for the physical and psychological injuries these men suffered. The men represented in the lawsuit were incarcerated in U.S. detention facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan, where they were subjected to torture and other cruel and degrading treatment, including severe and repeated beatings, cutting with knives, sexual humiliation and assault, mock executions, death threats, and restraint in contorted and excruciating positions. None of the men were ever charged with a crime.
There isn't any other information that we can find on this report — no indication of who the high-ranking official might be, or any other details. Also, thus far, we haven't been able to confirm this report via any other source, including the ACLU and Human Rights First web sites. We'll continue to check into this story, and post any relevant updates here.
[Update 3-1: According to an article from Reuters, the lawsuit will be filed against Donald Rumsfeld, which isn't exceedingly shocking.]
[Update 3-1: You can check out the official coverage of this story from both the ACLU, and Human Rights First.]
