« Skeptics' Circle #34 (and #33) The Rants Yeah, But What Was His Plea? »

Under Attack
2006.05.11 (Thu) 22:03

No, we're not paranoid — or rather, we are, but they're still out to get us.

For those of you who attempted to comment on any of our Rants today, and got an error page, we just wanted to let you know that we're aware of the problem, and it should be fixed now.

The cause was two-fold. First, we got slammed by a bunch of motherfucking, ass-sucking, shitlicking, fuckwad fucks who should be rammed up the asshole with sexist asshat Bill Napoli's Asshat of the Year award until they bleed anally. These soulless fucks decided to try comment-spamming us with around 250 bogus comments in the span of ten minutes. Spoofing their IP addresses enabled them to get around our comment throttle. Most of the comments, of course, couldn't get through our comment moderation — but that doesn't mean we didn't have to deal with them, it just spares our readers.

The second problem is that our web host, while usually operating acceptably, doesn't have a fucking clue when it comes to technical support. Their idea of taking care of things when our commenting process began hoarding too much server time and bandwidth is to zero out the permissions and not bother to tell us about it. This wouldn't be that terrible, except for the fact that their technical support is so abysmally incompetent that it took us the rest of the day to get our permissions back so we could troubleshoot the problem as best we could (without a shell account). Thanks for getting our back, dickwads.

If anyone knows of a good web host with plenty of storage, liberal bandwidth and some actual competent technical support, feel free to drop us a line. Use of cPanel is a plus, non-smoking preferred, and must love dogs.

Dreamhost.com. We've been with them for going on three years and it's been nothing short of great. Awesome tech support, mervelous uptime and they tell you when things break, most recently with an RSS feed.

I use BlueHost. It has cPanel. Since I know next to nothing about hosting, I'll just say that they've been nice, pleasant, dealt with all of my problems and retarded questions, and leave it at that.

Thanks very much to Brian and the Retropolitan. Both Dreamhost and BlueHost look fantastic — check out those packages! — and just a cursory glance has convinced us that we'll probably be switching hosts very soon. If we go with any host that someone suggests to us here or through our contact page, we'll certainly name that person as a referrer (in case you get any bonuses for it).

Thanks again...now it's time for us to compare and contrast, just like on the new SATs.

Lypha.com is who I use. I host 14 domains with them. They are really excellent, and their tech support is really responsive.

I use prostohost.ru lol :)))

Спасибо, друг. Unfortunately, our Русский is a little rusty, so we'd be worried about what we might unwittingly sign up for.

Pyccknn?

Jeff from the Two Percent Company, 2007.02.26 (Mon) 23:12 [Link] »

It's Russian for "Russian," GOD777. The host that hhh suggested had the ".ru" country code in its top level domain, which signifies Russia. I was just indulging in a little polyglot humor. And miserably failing, apparently, since successful humor should generally be humorous to as many people as possible. I'm such a goddamn effete, intellectual Northeastern elitist. I'll work on that.
